La Pepita : an Alternative in Fast Food Restaurants

If you love hamburgers but you are bored of the taste of the pre-cooked hamburgers of McDonalds or Burger King Restaurants, you should go to La pepita Burger Bar. This restaurant, situated in calle Oporto near to the church of García Barbón, was opened in March of 2012 and from the beginning, it has been an alternative to the classic franchise of fast food restaurants. The main factor for the success of this Burger Bar is the use of food fresh to elaborate delicious hamburgers. For this reason it is normal to see queues at lunch or dinner time during the weekend. However, if you don’t want to wait, you can phone them and then to pick up your order to eat it at home, but I think that it is worth eating there. In the next link, you can see more information like the menu or their telephone number for orders:

A day on Ons island

The best way to go to Ons island is by getting a bus as far as Bueu's harbor and then buy your tickets in the ticket office (placed in the harbor). The journey to the island takes around 30 minutes and in the meantime you can see beautiful views of Marin and Pontevedra.

Once you are there you can choose a lot of things to do, for example you can go sightseeing visiting places likes "O buraco do inferno".

Really, if you don't want to spend a lot of money you should bring your own food something like a ham/cheese roll or an omelette. If you don't do that, you can eat in different traditional restaurants placed there.

In the afternoon, you can choose between doing one of the three routes for a walk. We would recommend doing the "natural route", you will walk about two kilometers as far as "Playa de Melide" and there you can spend a good evening!

BAR BRASIL

BAR BRASIL

UPDATE: Bar Brasil is alas no more :(
It will be remembered by many.

Bar Brasil is a typical Galician bar; it's not too modern and the interior isn't very beautiful but for me it is like being at home. When I go there I always felt like as if I am in my grandmother´s home. This bar is situated in Calle Brasil about 12 minutes from Gran Vía (Vigo).
If you go to take a beer or a cola they give you these with one “tapa” for free but for me this bar is perfect to have a dinner with your friends.
If you go with your friends to take a dinner you can order a lot of delicious tapas. These tapas can be: tortilla (omelette), mejillones (mussels), zorza (meat marinated in spices), chipirones (European squid), calamares… everything that you order there is fresh and delicious. During the dinner you can drink very good wine and after the dinner the waiters are going to give you liquor coffee free of charge, which is a typical liquor from Galicia. And the service is perfect; it is for this that I say that I feel like I'm at home, because the waiters are very pleasant and friendly.
You have to know that this bar not is a luxury bar, because it is small and not very beautiful but I think that this not is the most important for dinner. Because the dishes are very tasty and the price is really reasonable. I never pay there more than ten Euros and I always eat a lot.

You can´t be in Vigo for a year and not know where Bar Brasil is!

A little guide to visit the Cies Islands

The Cies Islands form part of a National Reserve and they are a little natural paradise located on  the outside of the Ria of Vigo, protecting it from the strong currents and winds of the Atlantic Ocean. When the Romans came to Galicia they named them “God Islands” because they thought the Islands were formed when God put his hand to rest in Galicia, and the form of the Rias are his fingerprints. The Cies consists of three Islands: the north island or “Monteagudo island”, the middle island or “Faro island” and the south island or “San Martiño island”. The south island is not open to visiters without a special permission because the National Reserve needs a zone free of human presence.

                                                                                            Cies location

The Cies Islands can be visited from May to October. In my opinion, the best time to visit them is in spring because the weather is usually good, it’s the time when the plants have flowers and also the trip is a bit cheaper (€16). To visit them you should take a boat from Vigo, Cangas or Baiona. To check the price and the boats' timetables click here.

One day is time enough to visit the Cies Islands, but if you want to stay overnight there is a camp site on the middle island. The campsite is only opened at Easter and in summer. You can bring your own tent or rent one in the campsite. To check the prices of the campsite click here.

It’s a good idea to bring your own food because the bar on the island is expensive. You can use the tables and chairs of the restaurant without problems though. On the Island there are no containers, so you must take a bag for the garbage and take it back to Vigo.

You can spend your time on the islands in many ways, especially on the beach during summer, but if you want to know more about the islands, there are two main routes both of which start from the campsite. I will try to explain the most interesting things of each one.

1. Faro route

This is the longest and the hardest route, so it’s better to do this route in the morning because if you do it on the afternoon, maybe you won’t have enough time to get back to take the boat. To do this route you have to take the path which heads west from the campsite. Faro means lighthouse.

The first thing you will find is a small monastery on the right side of the road. This monastery was built 1300 years ago because the Islands were a place very rich in seafood, but the good life did not last long due to pirate attacks. In 1810 the ruins of the monastery were used to build an artillery warehouse to defend the Islands from these attacks. Now, this monastery is the information center of the Natural Reserve.

                                                                                        Monastery

If you continue walking, you will find a deviation on the right side of the road where you can find a bird observatory and the “Pedra da Campá”. It can be translated as Bell stone. The peculiar shape of this stone is due to the action of rain over the years. The rocks of the island are made of granite. The parts of the rock more rich in quartz are more resistant to rain erosion than the parts less rich in quartz. This is the main reason why many rocks on the island have peculiar shapes.

                                                                          Bell stone

At the end of the path there is the lighthouse. It was built in 1852 due to the petition of a British steamboat company which said that sailing close to the islands was very difficult. From this site you can see both sides of the islands and the obvious contrast between them. The west side is formed by cliffs and sea caves due to the strong currents of the Atlantic Ocean. The east side is more protected from the currents and the wind, it has a less steep relief and it’s where the beaches are located.

                                                                            Lighthouse

2. “Alto del príncipe” route

This route is shorter and easier than the other one. You should take the path that leads east from the campsite.“Alto del príncipe” means the prince's pass.

The first thing you will find is a little bridge which joins the north and the middle island. It was built many years ago for the transport of goods between the islands. You can also see the Rodas beach joining the two islands. This beach was considered the most beautiful beach in the world in 2007 by The Guardian. You can see the flora of the dunes, which is in danger of extinction in Galicia due to the disappearance of the beach dunes by human activity such as coastal constructions and activities.

                                                                             Rodas beach

Between the bridge and the beach is the “Lago dos nenos” which means the children's lake. The origin of this name is because in the past this lake was the place where the children of the visitors were given a bath. From the bridge you can see many of the marine fauna like fishes, squids, crabs or octopuses.

                                                                          Bridge and children's lake

Along the way you can find many kinds of trees. The highlight of this is that along the first part of the path you will find many eucalyptuses. It’s an exotic tree which comes from Australia. It was introduced into Galicia to repopulate the burned forests due to his fast growth. The problem is that it consumes all the ground nutrients and doesn’t let other plants grow. If you look at the ground near the eucalyptuses, there aren’t any plants or flowers. Along the final part of the path the workers of the National Reserve are trying to repopulate the forest with indigenous trees such as birches, alders and arbutuses.

                                                                           Eucalyptuses on Cies islands

At the end of the way you find the “Alto del príncipe”. You can see a rock which is similar to a throne. This rock is called the Queen's chair. It was created in the same way that the Bell stone. It’s a perfect place to take a picture.

Top of the prince and Queen's chair

That’s all. I hope you liked this little guide. I'd just like to say one more thing: remember that these islands are a Natural Reserve, so please, do respect the flora and the fauna which live there and try to not leave trash on the Islands.

A Guía

If you want to see one of the best views in Vigo, you should go to "A Guía" mountain.
"A Guía" is the mountain that watches over Vigo and it's at the top of the neighbourhood of Teis, along the Avenue of "Doña Fermina".
"A Guía" is one of the three parklands in Vigo, the other two are "O Castro" and "Castrelos".
The park has at a small chapel "A Nosa Señora da Guía" and it also has a lot of paths and green areas.
You can go for a walk, do sports or simply enjoy the magnificent views.
It's a nice place to enjoy nature and you also have nearby the beach of "A punta", a beautiful seaside spot, specially at low tide.It is close to the mountainside.

Here are two pictures of the amazing views in front of the little chapel:

For lovers of beer and German food in Vigo

There exists in Vigo a quiet pedestrianized street, between Gran Vía street and Camelias street (Near the square of America) called González Sierra street. There, you can find a beer and german food shop.  It’s name is  “J.Terré”.

Who is J.Terré?

J.Terré responds to Javier Terré,  a brewmaster since 1992. Here you can buy and taste a wide selection of beers worldwide at great prices.  You can buy handmade sausages made by German butchers, sausages with the best Galician meat and products to accompany them.

The decoration has a marked Central European accent. There is an exhibition with many items related to the world of beer. Inside the shop, you can drink some beer, too.  Also, you can choose from five draght beers and over a hundred bottled beers.

Draft beers such as:

In J.Terré, if you like Britain beers you can also enjoy "Samuel Smith's" beers such as Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter, Samuel Smith's Oatmeals, Samuel Smith's Nut or Imperial Stout.  You can choose from "Shepherd Neame" beers, Britain's oldest brewer, such as Spitfire, Bishops Finger, Celebration 1698...

And if you are thinking about lunch, you can buy from a wide range of German sausages. For example: The white sausage of Bavaria (Weisswust Senf) or the red smoked sausage (Pizzaknackwurst). There are a lot of different options in Vigo, when you think in eating. The city has an incredible variety of gastronomy, mostly based in the sea (in this case, your objective is 'la Piedra'in front of the harbour, where you can degustate expensive seafood) but there are options for all tastes....
If you like fast food, you can chose the same options you'll find around the world: Mc Donalds in Beach Samil or in Urzaiz Street, in the centre city.
If you like home made hamburguers or fresh rolls, you should visit Bahía Blanca Bar, at the head of Travesía de Vigo, next to the big roundabout. They serve good  quality food, and price is razonable (one fresh made ham sandwich costs over  3 euros).
If you prefer take a salad or one mixed dish, you can visit the CC Gran Vía, situated  at the end of the Gran Vía avenue. There are a lot of restaurants that offers a big variety of services: an vegetarian restaurant, one chinese free bouffet or one mediterranean free bouffet. In these places, for 10 euros, more or less, you can eat everything you want(drink is not included). The limit is the capacity of your stomach!!.Very recomendable for greedy people. In the same CC, you can find, of course, the typical fast food restaurant Mac donalds.
If you like wine, beer or tapas, you can visit the snack bars of Rosalia de Castro, the posh zone of the city, ubicated near the port. Here you can enjoy some tapas of octopus or squid , accompanied by the best wines  or imported beers.

PLACES TO VISIT IN VIGO

Beaches: like Samil or Vao, which are very famous on the Galician coast. If you go by car, maybe you could find parking problems though. Sometimes the best option is to take a bus such as the C15C,C3, or C15A. You can also enjoy the views of the Cies Islands or the best sunset from the beach. But in summer it's a problem to go there because there are always a lot of people. Not always do you have to have a swim or sunbathe, you can just walk along the beach.

Restaurants in 'La Piedra': probably if you are wealthy you can pay for a delicious seafood dish. But don't eat too much of that because you could have stomachache or stomach problems.

Castro is a place that is considered like a park because it has a lot of things. It's a good place for taking photos or going for a walk.If you have children they can learn to ride a bike because there is a little close circuit. There are also little playgrounds for kids and they're great fun for them. Castro is situated behind the city centre. The problem is you have to go up a steep street to get there.

Cíes Islands: you can visit the most beautiful beaches in the world, on the Cíes Islands. They are in front of city centre. You can go there by ship and enjoy the sea from the ship's deck.
You should buy the tickets in the port; they cost about €5.

PUB'S: A night out in Vigo means Arenal, which is in the city centre near the marina and port. There, you can find a lot of terraces, where you can have a drink, for example, a cocktail, or dance. One of them, Twenty Century Rock, has good music on Saturday nights, and has a great decoration, inspired by the eighties.

Airport: Vigo has a poor airport: there are few planes, and few destinations, which connect Vigo with Madrid and Vigo with Barcelona. The airport is very big in comparison with its capacity. Often there're some temporary exhibitions, related with nature. Close to the airport, there's a panoramic trail, called the GR53, which is very useful for people who enjoy outdoors activities and sport.

A day out in La Coruña

A good plan to spend a day for someone who is in Vigo is to visit La Coruña. La Coruña is a beautiful city in the northwest of Galicia. From Vigo you can go by train or by bus. If you take a bus the journey is cheaper but, in my opinion, the train is more comfortable. Anyway, either way, the journey’ll probably take more or less two hours so you need to get up early.

Both stations are close. In the morning, you can visit one of the many museums in the city. Coruña has a lot of interesting museums. I’m going to talk about three of them and you can choose one or maybe two. The first one, Domus, is an interactive museum. You could see there the brains of different animals and explore a lot of things about your own body. Another one is “Casa de los Peces”. It’s near Domus and you could see a lot of species of fish. It costs €10. These two museums are in the Paseo Marítimo (the prom), there you  can see a wonderful view of the city. Another interesting museum is the “Casa de las Ciencias” (the House of Science), it costs 2 euros and it is in a beautiful park called “Parque de Santa Margarita”. There, they have a planetarium and in the same building there is an area which offers explanations and demonstrations related to physics.

If you arrive at the train station you should cross one zebra crossing and then another one on your left. Then, you should cross an overhead bridge to cross the road “Alfonso Molina” on foot and on the other side of the road you have an information point for tourists, so you can ask there for the buses that go to the museums. If you arrive at the bus station you should go up the stairs and the information point is after the car park.

At midday you could take a bus to the city hall which is a very beautiful building and the square too where the city hall is located. If you are in the square, called María Pita, and you go to the street behind you in the right corner, you can see the port. And if you ask someone they will direct you to a very typical place where you can eat good food at a reason price. It’s called “La Bombilla”.

The best plan for the afternoon is to visit the different monuments of the city. Maybe you could take a bus to the city centre and go to ‘Monte San Pedro’.There you will see two enormous guns that were important in the Second World War. Also you can see the beautiful views of Coruña city. If you pay attention you will be able to make out a sillouette which is the Tower of Hercules which overlooks the sea. This is your next destination.

One more time, you have to take another bus. This tower is the world’s oldest lighthouse and has survived many wars.

To finish, you can go back to the city by walking along the beautiful ‘Paseo Marítimo’ and go to a famous bar near the train station named ‘La Estrella. There you can drink a typical and delicious Galician beer and practice your Spanish or Galician with the locals.

At 9, your train takes off and you will return to Vigo with the satisfaction of knowing another interesting and lovely city called A Coruña.
